Sculpted Serenity

Site Writing

Exploring Shamaj Biggyan Chattar through site-writing, the project delves into the perspective of a frequent visitor, reflecting on their subject position while engaging with the site’s distinctive features and exploring material and conceptual dimensions, alongside the realms of memory, dreams, and imagination.

Part 1: Choreography of Spaces

A play of colors, textures, along with shade and shadow – the Shamaj Biggyan Chattar at Dhaka University promises all its visitors an experience that transcends boundaries as to how nature attempts to coexist amongst busy settings. A passerby, at a glance, cannot truly comprehend the dramatic play of space and levels inside. Surely, going with Shivan, someone who has experienced the space before, can express the magical essence that it holds better and how it tends to integrate with nature. She emphasizes on the locality of the enclosure, as it is surrounded by various points of interest like the Dhaka University Central Mosque and the Dhaka University library, yet, for many it is a small solace that embraces nature, away from the surrounding bustle of the area. To her, the enclosure is an arena of its own, where nature delicately blends along with the manmade landscape, and in her words, “feels like a breath of fresh air, away from the outside world”. She follows the natural order of trees, which act as guides, its body paving the way to go along with it and delve deeper into the focal point of the space. Her interpretation of the environment is that of a free flowing language of her own, quite flexible and gradually unravelling on its own. This journey leads her to spend minutes by the wide, faded, maroon brick steps that encircle a central water body, as she listening to the quiet hum of nature, birds and occasionally some people.

Part 2: Emotional Explorations

Shivan goes on to add how the various perspectives and angles along the central steps that lead down to the pond add a sense of allure to the entire setting. Whether it is the constant level changes, or ramps that allow better space flow or even the bridge that allows better spatial linkage, they are all elements that enhance the visual connectivity, a feat she greatly enjoys. A sense of harmony and integration between material and scenic richness is achieved by the usage of the rough, bare brick in various settings and orientations. After a while, she rushes to the top most level to take in the entire space at a glance, subconsciously stepping on the crisp fallen leaves along the way. To Shivan, the holistic aura of the place is in the various activities happening at all ends of the area – starting from the roadside tea vendor crowd to people sitting near the water body reading a book – all happening in one frame, yet so drastically contrasting. Some vivid greens adorn a horizontal grid, further emphasizing the need to be confined by nature rather than the usual concrete boxes of the outside world – an idea the she talks about every now and then. The space evokes a sense of calmness within her, and I understand why this place means so much to her, because it merges human qualities to nature’s own spirit.
